BSNL to Launch 4G, 5G Universal SIM for Seamless Switch

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), the state-run telecom firm, is set to roll out a 4G and 5G compatible Over-The-Air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform. This new platform will allow subscribers to choose their mobile numbers and replace SIM cards without any geographical limitations. BSNL announced that this platform, developed in collaboration with Pyro Holdings, was inaugurated in Chandigarh, with a disaster recovery site established in Trichy. According to BSNL, the 4G and 5G compatible platform is designed to provide exceptional connectivity and service quality to all its customers across India.

The launch of this platform aligns with BSNL’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its network to 4G and 5G, positioning the company as a leader in telecommunications innovation. BSNL highlighted that this initiative is a critical step towards bridging the digital divide, empowering citizens in rural and remote areas by ensuring equitable access to advanced telecommunications services.

The OTA and USIM platform will offer BSNL mobile subscribers the flexibility to select their mobile numbers instantly and facilitate SIM replacements without geographical constraints. This platform will be particularly beneficial for customers needing to replace SIM cards, modify SIM profiles, or manage SIM card files remotely. It also allows SIM swaps to be conducted from any location within the country, according to BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi A. Robert Jerard.

Earlier this month, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that BSNL plans to install 80,000 towers for 4G services by the end of October, with the remaining 21,000 to be installed by March 2025. The company has already launched 4G services in select areas, including Punjab, using indigenously developed network equipment.
