Starlink Secures License for Satellite Broadband in India

Starlink Secures License for Satellite Broadband in India

Summary:
Elon Musk’s Starlink has got the government approval to provide satellite-based internet services in India, which is an important step towards bringing high speed connectivity to remote regions. Supported by an integrated license and spectrum framework, Starlink plans to launch its services at the end of 2025 or early 2026, with pricing starts around ₹ 3,000 per month.

Starlink License Approval

SpaceX’s satellite internet initiative Starlink, officially granted an integrated license by the Government of India, allows it to offer satellite broadband services across the country. The announcement was confirmed by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who said that India now has a clear regulatory structure for spectrum allocation and gateway infrastructure – satellite is important for internet purpose.

With this approval, Starlink incorporates OneWeb and Reliance Jio as a major satellite internet provider in India, but it is overshadowed across the country on a maximum of 2 million user connections.

Starlink India Launch Timeline

Starlink is expected to start operations in India at the end of 2025 or early 2026, subject to the final regulatory approval. The company has been in discussion with Indian officials since 2022 but concerns about national security and spectrum regulation delayed launch.

Starlink Pricing in India

  • Monthly membership: ₹ 3,000 (approx)
  • Starlink Kit Cost: ₹ 33,000 (Satellite Dish, Wi-Fi router, growing hardware, cable and power supply)

Once installed, the system can provide ideal internet pace from 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps to rural, hill or poorly connected areas.

Strategic Partnerships: Airtel & Jio Onboard

To enable a nationwide rollout, Starlink will collaborate with Airtel and Reliance Jio, avail its distribution network to distribute equipment and services. This partnership will streamline logistics and potentially improve customer service and local support.

Satellite Fleet and Global Reach

Starlink has already deployed over 6,000 satellites and plans to expand up to 42,000 by 2027, making it the world’s largest low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite network. This service is already operational in 100+ countries, providing low delays as 20–40 ms, and especially suited for hill, tribal or remote areas where fiber or mobile connectivity struggles.

Starlink India Will be Standout

India is still digitally divided. It lacks reliable internet in many rural and isolated areas. Starlink’s satellite-based service provides a plug-and-play solution, requiring only a clear view of the sky-for some towers or cables-it makes a game changer for Digital India and rural connectivity goals.

With its regulatory approval and a strong hardware footprint globally, Starlink is set to revolutionize internet access in India. Starlink can reopen rural education, telemedicine and remote work infrastructure across the country by distributing high-speed satellite internet at those places where traditional telecommunication fails.
