Jio Reveals India’s First Satellite-Based Gigabit Broadband in IMC 2023

At the India Mobile Congress 2023 (IMC), Reliance Jio successfully showcased India’s inaugural high-speed satellite-based broadband service, known as JioSpaceFiber. This groundbreaking offering will deliver gigabit internet services via satellites, expanding access to even the most remote regions of India.

Enhancing Digital Inclusion

Jio currently serves over 450 million users through its JioFiber and JioAirFiber fixed-line and wireless broadband services. JioSpaceFiber represents a significant stride in advancing digital inclusion, extending its reach to India’s far-flung corners and reinforcing Jio’s capacity for Jio True5G mobile backhaul in rural locales.

Collaboration with SES

To enable satellite broadband services, Jio has joined forces with SES, a prominent American satellite operator. SES leverages advanced medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites such as 03b and the new mPOWER fleet, capable of delivering broadband speeds comparable to fiber via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations.

Cutting-Edge Satellite Technology

Through the utilization of SES’s satellites, JioSpaceFiber can offer the following:

– Gigabit-speed internet

– Consistent high throughput

– Low latency

– Carrier-grade reliability

This positions it as a groundbreaking entrant in India’s satellite broadband sector.

Successful Trials Nationwide

JioSpaceFiber has already undergone successful trials in four remote Indian locations, affirming its ability to deliver high-speed and dependable satellite internet services to even the most isolated areas. The locations include Gir (Gujarat), Korba (Chhattisgarh), Nabarangpur (Odisha), and the ONGC Plant in Jorhat (Assam).

Driving Digital Transformation

Speaking at IMC 2023, Akash Ambani, Chairman of Jio, expressed how JioSpaceFiber will bridge the digital divide by providing affordable and dependable broadband connectivity. He highlighted its potential to revolutionize governance, education, healthcare, and entertainment, fostering widespread participation in the digital age. JP Hemingway, CEO of SES, further emphasized the partnership’s aim to bolster Digital India by delivering multi-gigabit bandwidth capabilities across the nation.

Leading Connectivity in India – Land, Air, Sea, and Space

JioSpaceFiber’s pioneering demonstration reaffirms Jio’s commitment to connecting people and entities across India, be it on land, in the air, at sea, or even in space. Satellite broadband emerges as a promising frontier for Jio’s digital connectivity endeavors, both in urban and rural India.
