Scindia: C-DOT to Help India Move From Telecom Self-Reliance to Global Leadership

Scindia C-DOT to Help India Move From Telecom Self-Reliance to Global Leadership

Summary:
The government has highlighted C-DOT’s role in helping India transition from telecom self-reliance to becoming a global source of technology and innovation. At its 43rd Foundation Day, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia noted India’s progress in indigenous 4G and 5G technologies and said C-DOT could help the country take a leading position in 6G. C-DOT also unveiled 14 quantum technology products, while its Sanchar Saathi platform has helped trace 36 lakh stolen devices, block nearly 57 lakh lost or stolen phones and prevent an estimated ₹4,000 crore in financial fraud. The organisation’s revenue has risen from ₹80 crore to ₹600 crore in five years, with a target of ₹5,000 crore in the coming years.

The government on Tuesday highlighted the technological capabilities of the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the state-owned telecommunications technology development organisation, saying it will be instrumental in helping India move from self-reliance towards becoming a global source of telecom innovation.

Speaking at C-DOT’s 43rd Foundation Day, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said India has entered the group of four countries supplying advanced 4G and 5G telecom equipment globally and has become the fifth country to develop its own indigenous 4G stack.

Scindia expressed confidence that C-DOT would help India progress from being dependent on global technologies to becoming a country whose innovations are relied upon by the world.

He noted that India had lagged behind other nations in 4G and moved alongside the global community during the 5G era. However, with the contribution of organisations such as C-DOT, the government and citizens can now aspire to India taking a leading role in 6G.

As India advances towards the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, Scindia said C-DOT must focus on moving technologies from laboratories to markets, progressing from research to development and taking its innovations to international markets. He added that the next phase of telecommunications would not simply be about connecting people, but about creating networks that are trusted, resilient, intelligent and, above all, secure.

On the occasion, C-DOT introduced 14 quantum technology products, several of which have already been deployed in live networks and hold significance from a national security standpoint.

Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said the Sanchar Saathi app, developed by C-DOT, has so far helped trace around 36 lakh stolen devices and block nearly 57 lakh lost or stolen mobile phones. He noted that while a mobile phone may appear to be an ordinary device, it can represent a significant investment for many families.

Pemmasani also said the Sanchar Saathi portal receives more than 25 crore website visits daily, while the app records around 2.5 crore downloads every day. The platform is estimated to have helped prevent financial fraud worth ₹4,000 crore so far.

Meanwhile, C-DOT CEO RK Upadhyay said the organisation has increased its revenue from ₹80 crore to ₹600 crore over the past five years. With guidance from the communications ministers, C-DOT has set itself a target of reaching ₹5,000 crore in revenue over the next few years.
