Jio Completes 10 Years of Reshaping Indias Digital Connectivity

Summary:
Reliance Jio is marking 10 years of operations by highlighting how affordable connectivity and technology innovation have transformed India’s digital landscape. Since its 2016 launch, mobile data prices have fallen sharply while usage has increased significantly, with Jio now serving more than 524 million customers. The company has expanded into 5G, broadband, cloud, AI and enterprise solutions, and says its next decade will focus on helping India evolve from a major technology consumer into a developer and exporter of advanced technologies.

Reliance Jio, which is completing a decade of operations, has highlighted the role of affordable connectivity and technology-driven innovation in reshaping India’s digital environment. The company said India has moved from relatively low mobile data consumption to becoming one of the world’s largest data-consuming markets.

Jio was established with the aim of accelerating India’s digital transformation by making high-speed connectivity affordable and accessible to a wider population.

When Jio entered the Indian market in 2016, mobile data was costly, with average monthly usage below 0.2 GB per user. Data prices, which were approximately ₹228 per GB at the time, have now dropped to around ₹7.9, while average monthly consumption on Jio’s network has increased to about 42.3 GB.

Jio currently has more than 524 million customers, while its digital applications record over 360 million monthly active users. The company has also expanded its presence across home broadband, enterprise connectivity, cloud services, devices and artificial intelligence.

The company has built an end-to-end technology ecosystem covering its 5G network and fixed wireless access technology. Jio has filed more than 6,800 patents in areas including 4G, 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence and cloud technologies.

Its technology platforms are being adopted by businesses, banks, airports and electricity distribution companies, while private 5G networks are also being developed for industrial use.

On satellite connectivity, Jio executives said services such as Starlink may find opportunities in countries with lower population coverage. However, they noted that India’s extensive terrestrial telecom infrastructure could restrict the role of satellite services in mainstream connectivity.

Jio said its focus will remain on delivering faster, better and more affordable digital services while continuing to collaborate with global technology companies and partners.

The company also emphasised its expanding work in AI and next-generation technologies, stating that the next decade will focus on helping India transition from being a major technology consumer to becoming a developer and exporter of technology.
