Comminent and Silicon Labs have together delivered more than five lakh Wi-SUN-certified modules across India

Summary:
Comminent and Silicon Labs have jointly delivered over 5 lakh Wi-SUN-certified communication modules for smart grid projects across India. Powered by Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG28 wireless SoC, the modules are designed to provide reliable long-range connectivity for demanding field environments. The companies said India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) is driving large-scale smart grid modernisation, while the adoption of the global Wi-SUN FAN specification by the Bureau of Indian Standards is supporting nationwide smart meter deployments. Both firms highlighted the growing role of scalable, secure, and self-healing Wi-SUN networks in enabling real-time monitoring and grid resilience, with Comminent also expanding into global smart grid markets including the United States and Japan.

Comminent and US-based Silicon Labs announced that they have together supplied more than 5 lakh Wi-SUN-certified communication modules for multiple smart grid projects across India.

The modules are built using Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG28 wireless system-on-chip (SoC), a platform designed to deliver dependable long-range connectivity in challenging field conditions.

The companies noted that India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) is currently driving one of the world’s largest infrastructure modernisation programmes.

To facilitate the large-scale deployment of smart meters, the Bureau of Indian Standards adopted the global Wi-SUN Field Area Network (FAN) specification as the country’s official standard for smart meter RF communication systems.

Ross Sabolcik, Senior Vice President (Product Lines) at Silicon Labs, stated that Comminent reaching the 500,000-unit milestone demonstrates the increasing adoption of Wi-SUN technology in large-scale implementations. He added that Silicon Labs is pleased to collaborate with Comminent in delivering secure, scalable, and robust technology infrastructure required for India’s extensive grid modernisation initiatives and reliable connectivity deployment.

As utility companies move toward real-time monitoring capabilities and stronger grid resilience, interoperable and self-healing technologies such as Wi-SUN are increasingly becoming the foundation for large-scale network deployments.

Amarjeet Kumar, Founder and CEO of Comminent, said India’s smart metering programme represents one of the largest infrastructure upgrades globally, and the milestone highlights the growing preference for scalable and utility-grade communication platforms like Wi-SUN.

The Bengaluru-based company is also expanding its presence in international smart grid markets, including the United States, Japan, and other regions focusing on energy transition initiatives.
