VIAVI Unveils Advanced Sensing Solutions for Fiber Optic Cables and Critical Infrastructure

Viavi Solutions Inc. (Viavi) has announced Nitro® fiber sensing, an integrated real-time asset monitoring and analytics solution, designed for important infrastructure including oil, gas and water pipelines, electric power transmission, range/security, and data center interconnects.

Operators often face significant challenges in protecting and optimizing their important infrastructure. Damage to these assets can result in costs that are higher than the initial investment. Therefore, Swift detection, localization and prevention of external hazards are important to reduce damage and outages, which reduces the total cost (TCO) of ownership. Additionally, customized operations help ensure that the production target is met.

Nitro fiber sensing distributed temperature sensing (DTS), simultaneously combines temperature and stress sensory (DTSS), and distributes acoustic sensing (DAS) technologies to provide important intelligence necessary to identify and find the dangers.

Fiber Test Heads

The solution fiber uses optic cable or fiber-capable infrastructure to monitor the distance fiber testing heads (FTH), or inquiries. By demonstrating real-time distributed fiber optic sensing, FTH can measure temperature and stress with a fiber or detect acoustic vibrations near a fiber. Strategically deployed with power cables and pipelines, FTH provides valuable infrastructure health data that supports active maintenance and prevents downtime. The system alerts potential hazards such as human intervention, vehicle movement, excavation operations, fishing nets, or ship anchors encroaching on valuable assets, providing accurate location information to help maintenance, response or repair teams.
