TRAI to Launch Consultation on Satellite Telecom Spectrum Allocation

TRAI to Launch Consultation on Satellite Telecom Spectrum Allocation

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to begin a consultation process next month to establish the terms, conditions, and procedures for the administrative allocation of spectrum for satellite-based telecom services. This initiative reflects the rapid growth of India’s satellite communications sector, which is poised to significantly enhance the country’s telecommunications infrastructure

TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti announced this forthcoming consultation during the ‘India Satcom 2024’ event organized by the Broadband India Forum. He explained that under the Telecom Act, spectrum can be assigned through an administrative process for certain satellite-based services, and TRAI is preparing a consultation paper on the matter.

Scheduled for release in the first week of September, the consultation paper will address issues such as spectrum pricing and other key considerations. Lahoti emphasized the vital role of satellite communications in extending broadband access, especially to remote areas, and in supporting connectivity for vehicles, vessels, and IoT devices.

He also underscored the importance of satellite systems in disaster relief operations when terrestrial networks are disrupted. With advancements in satellite technology, including high throughput and software-defined satellites, next-generation capabilities are expected to emerge, supporting the future of 5G and 6G networks. Additionally, TRAI is considering ways to streamline authorizations and simplify regulatory conditions to create a more business-friendly environment.
