Spectrum Auction 2024 Concludes- Here is What Happened

The expiring spectrum in 2024 and the unsold spectrum from the 2022 Spectrum Auction were put up for auction this year to meet the spectrum requirements of Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and ensure continuity and growth of services.

All available spectrum in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands were included in the auction. This year’s auction saw activity in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2500 MHz bands.

The auction commenced on June 25, 2024, at 10:00 AM and concluded on June 26, 2024, at 11:45 AM, after seven rounds. Given that a 5G spectrum auction was recently held and 5G monetization is still in progress, there was no bidding in the 800 MHz, 2300 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands. A total of 141.4 MHz (26.5%) was sold from the remaining 533.6 MHz spectrum, despite a significant amount of 51.2 GHz spectrum being sold in August 2022.

All three TSPs—Bharti Airtel Limited, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, and Vodafone Idea Limited—successfully bid for and acquired spectrum in this auction to support the growth and continuity of their services. A total of 141.4 MHz spectrum worth Rs 11,340 crores was sold.

Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Vodafone Idea Ltd. successfully renewed their expired spectrum in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. Additionally, an extra 87.2 MHz worth Rs 6,164.88 crores was acquired by TSPs to enhance their services. The unsold spectrum will be put up for auction again next time.
