IIT Indore Develops Smart Receivers to Advance 6G Military Communications

As India advances toward 6G technology, IIT Indore is developing intelligent receivers to significantly enhance military communication capabilities, an official reported. These receivers can automatically detect and decode essential communication methods, such as modulation, channel coding, and interleaving, ensuring accurate data transmission even under challenging conditions with noise or interference, the IIT representative added.

“This technology is critical for future 6G networks and military communications. It enables receivers to decode signals in difficult environments, such as when military transmissions face interception. By automatically identifying key methods, it ensures crucial data can be extracted from unclear or noisy signals, which is invaluable for intelligence operations,” said Professor Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore.

As 6G emerges, communication systems will need to support ultra-fast mobile internet and vast networks like IoT. Traditionally, different receivers were required for different situations, complicating and increasing system costs. IIT Indore’s technology seeks to create a single adaptive receiver, simplifying setups and eliminating the need for multiple systems,” Joshi explained. The project is led by Dr. Swaminathan R, Professor of Electrical Engineering at IIT Indore.

“This breakthrough could transform telecommunications and military fields by enhancing efficiency and security. Unlike current systems, IIT Indore’s receivers can simultaneously recognize modulation, coding, and interleaving methods—a capability yet to be fully realized elsewhere. Early tests are promising, showing accurate detection of various channel encoders and interleavers,” Dr. Swaminathan noted. Real-time testing and expansion to cover communication standards from 3G to 6G are underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the India Mobile Congress 2024 last month, highlighted India’s rapid progress in 6G, following its rise as the world’s second-largest 5G market.
