Airtel Set to Launch Satellite Telecom Services in India

Airtel is ready to roll out satellite telecom services in India, pending government approval, according to Rajan Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman of Bharti Enterprises. Sunil Bharti Mittal previously stated that the company is fully equipped to launch satellite communication (Satcom) services, aiming to provide connectivity to even the remotest corners of the country.

Airtel’s Satcom Services in India

Rajan Bharti Mittal, speaking at the World Economic Forum, revealed that Airtel has completed preparations for its Satcom services, with two base stations set up in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. “Both our stations are ready. As soon as we get spectrum allocation approval, we will launch in India,” he said.

Globally, Bharti Enterprises has already deployed 635 satellites and is delivering Satcom services in various regions, Mittal added.

Spectrum Allocation Debate

Mittal addressed the ongoing discussion regarding spectrum allocation for satellite services, emphasizing the need for fairness. He reiterated Bharti Airtel’s position that satellite operators should pay licensing fees and obtain spectrum through auctions, similar to traditional telecom companies.

Connecting Remote Areas

Mittal highlighted the importance of satellite services in bridging connectivity gaps in remote and underserved regions. “This technology is essential for areas where terrestrial networks cannot reach, particularly for broadband connectivity in far-flung locations, maritime zones, and defense sectors,” he said.

He also called for a balanced approach in pricing, noting that Satcom services should remain affordable, particularly for rural and remote areas. “Terrestrial networks in India are robust with 4G and 5G in place. Satellites are not needed in urban areas but are crucial for far-flung regions. Pricing should reflect this distinction,” Mittal explained.

Outlook on Launch and Pricing

The company is optimistic about government recommendations on spectrum allocation and is committed to offering Satcom services at competitive prices in India. “We aim to deliver services at price points that align with India’s needs while ensuring robust connectivity in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks,” Mittal said.

With its infrastructure ready and global expertise in satellite services, Airtel is positioned to transform connectivity in India’s most remote regions, pending final regulatory clearances.
