Tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump have raised uncertainties about the future of SpaceX’s Starlink in Ukraine. In response, discussions are underway between Ukraine and the European Union to explore alternatives, with a focus on deploying OneWeb satellites as a replacement.
Eutelsat, a key European satellite operator, has confirmed its involvement in the initiative. A company representative told, “We are in discussions with the EU on how we can support Ukraine’s efforts.” Eutelsat is reportedly working closely with European institutions and business partners to enable the rapid deployment of additional user terminals for critical missions and infrastructure.
This development follows the U.S. government’s announcement that it will suspend further aid to Ukraine unless President Zelenskyy commits to peace negotiations. Since early 2022, Starlink has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense, including its use in the Battle of Kyiv for military operations. The potential shift to European satellite providers marks a significant strategic move in Ukraine’s communication infrastructure.
