Starlink India Pledges Data Safety

Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, has been officially approved to work in India. According to government rules, the company should ensure that the data of Indian citizens is not copied or stored outside the country, is an important step to protect national security. With already partnership with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel for kit distribution, Starlink is expected to revolutionize connectivity in rural and remote areas of India. 

Starlink’s India License and Security Rules 

Starlink has been licensed by the Government of India after months of review. However, the license comes with strict conditions i.e. Starlink cannot replicate, decipher or store the data of Indian users outside the country. It ensures compliance with domestic data protection laws and strengthens national security. 

Minister of State for Telecommunications Chandra Sekhar Pemmani confirmed that Starlink had agreed to follow all Indian laws, making it clear that it was non-negotiable. 

Starlink Partnerships with Jio and Airtel 

To speed up its rollout, Starlink has partnered with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Both telecom companies have broad networks in small towns, villages and remote areas, making them an ideal partner to distribute Starlink kits across India. This partnership is expected to provide a strong connectivity solution where fiber or mobile networks are weak. 

Impact on Connectivity and Employment 

The arrival of Starlink will play an important role in reducing India’s digital divide gap especially in rural and remote areas where traditional telecom infrastructure is limited.  According to the government, satellite-based communication services such as Starlink will also generate employment, as they need to install, operate and maintain user terminals and support telecommunications equipment
