India has outpaced developed nations like the UK and Japan in mobile speed, according to Ookla. With the introduction of 5G services, India’s mobile speed has soared, marking a remarkable 3.59-fold increase. This boost in speed has propelled India to the 47th position in the Speedtest Global Index, surpassing countries such as Japan, the UK, and Brazil.
India has also outperformed its neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, as well as several G20 nations, including Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th), and South Africa (48th).
The top 10 countries with the fastest mobile speeds, according to Ookla, are as follows:

2. Qatar (192.71 mbps)
3. Kuwait (153.86 mbps)
4. Norway (134.45 mbps)
5. Denmark (124 mbps)
6. China (122.89 mbps)
7. South Korea (120.08 mbps)

9. Iceland (110.02 mbps)
10. Netherlands (107.42 mbps)
India is ranked 47th with a speed of 50.21 mbps.
Ookla reports a remarkable 3.59-fold increase in mobile speed performance since the introduction of 5G, with median download speeds surging from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022 to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023. This improvement has propelled India 72 places higher in the Speedtest Global Index, from 119th place to 47th.
The deployment of 5G technology has significantly enhanced the overall user experience across all telecom circles, with telecom operators investing in backhaul infrastructure. Major Indian telecom companies like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have played a pivotal role in the substantial increase in 5G subscribers. They have been actively implementing 5G technology since acquiring 5G spectrum licenses in October 2022.
While median download speeds initially varied, ranging from 512.57 Mbps in Gujarat to 19.23 Mbps in Uttar Pradesh West during network development, by August 2023, median 5G download speeds exceeded 240 Mbps across all telecom areas. Kolkata led the way with a median download speed of 385.50 Mbps, according to Ookla Insights.
