What is the National Broadband Mission

The National Broadband Mission (NBM) is an initiative launched by the Government of India in December 2019 under the aegis of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). It is part of the Digital India initiative and aims to accelerate the expansion of broadband infrastructure and increase digital connectivity across the country.

Key Objectives of the National Broadband Mission

  1. Broadband Access to All Villages

The mission seeks to provide broadband access to all villages in India by 2025, ensuring equitable digital inclusion across urban and rural areas.

  1. Increase Broadband Penetration

The goal is to achieve a broadband speed of 50 Mbps for every citizen and significantly increase the number of broadband subscribers

  1. Development of Robust Digital Infrastructure

The mission focuses on deploying state-of-the-art digital communication infrastructure, including optical fiber networks and mobile towers, to improve connectivity.

  1. Investment in Digital Connectivity

The mission envisions attracting investments of ₹7 lakh crore for broadband infrastructure development, including public-private partnerships (PPPs).

  1. Right of Way (RoW) Reforms

Streamlining policies and processes for the installation of telecom infrastructure, such as fiber cables and towers, by addressing issues related to the Right of Way.

  1. Fiberization of Towers

The mission aims to connect at least 70% of telecom towers with fiber networks to enhance data handling capacity and improve service quality.

  1. Promote Emerging Technologies

Encourages the adoption of 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) to modernize India’s digital ecosystem.

  1. Employment Generation

The initiative is expected to create significant employment opportunities by boosting telecom and broadband infrastructure development.

Achievements and Progress

  • BharatNet Initiative

Under the mission, BharatNet has been a significant driver in extending broadband connectivity to rural areas, connecting over 2.5 lakh gram panchayats.

  • Fiber Deployment

Rapid expansion of optical fiber networks across the country to increase high-speed internet penetration.

  • Boosting Digital Economy

The mission supports the growth of India’s digital economy, enabling services like e-governance, telemedicine, e-education, and e-commerce.

The National Broadband Mission is crucial for bridging the digital divide and driving India’s vision of becoming a digitally empowered society. By fostering greater connectivity, the mission aims to strengthen the foundation for a robust digital infrastructure, contributing to economic growth and social inclusion.
