Vodafone Idea (Vi) plans to launch satellite-based mobile services via mid-2026, partnering with AST SpaceMobile to enhance 5G reach and tackle telecom fraud. The move objectives to place Vi as a greater resilient and steady telecom operation in India.

Satellite Services Launch & Strategy

Vodafone Idea and AST SpaceMobile are in talks with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to ensure a global mobile personal communications of satellite (GMPCS) license. When it is licensed, Vi expects to roll out satellite services around mid 2026, which enables coverage in remote or underrated areas.

Boosting 5G & Network Reach

With 5G deployment around 30 cities in 17 telecom circles, Vi traffic has increased by 25-30%. The satellite service tie-up will felicitate terrestrial coverage which will help Vi to fill the gaps in its network footprint and provides more consistent services.

Fighting Telecom Fraud & Caller ID Enhancements

Vodafone Idea is also preparing to roll anti-fraud feature ie Caller Name Presentation (CNAP), voice spam filter launching in October.

If Vodafone Idea successfully rolls out satellite services and fraud-prevention tools, it could gain an edge in both coverage and user trust. These plans may strengthen its situation against rivals and appeal to customers in remote or low-coverage areas.
