Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia announced on Saturday that the Indian government aims to achieve 100% telecom connectivity coverage in all villages across the country within the next 12 months. Special funds have been allocated by the Cabinet for this initiative, with Scindia personally overseeing the progress on a weekly basis. During a press conference, Scindia emphasized the government’s commitment to complete saturation, identifying approximately 24,000 villages that still lack adequate telecom infrastructure.

A special scheme has been launched to address this gap, with northeastern states being a primary focus. The plan includes the use of mixed technologies, such as V-sat and satellite, to ensure full coverage within the specified timeframe. Scindia noted that 13,000-14,000 villages have already been connected.
Additionally, Scindia highlighted the significant allocations for the northeastern states in the 2024-25 Union Budget, including around Rs 11,000 crore for flood management in Assam and Sikkim. He also announced the opening of 100 new branches of India Post Payments Bank in the region. Scindia stressed that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to integrate the North East into India’s growth narrative, emphasizing the benefits of various budget provisions for women, farmers, youth, and economically weaker sections.
