Starlink Sri Lanka Service to Start Soon, License Approved

Starlink Sri Lanka Service to Start Soon

Sri Lanka’s telecommunications regulator has granted a license to Elon Musk’s Starlink, the satellite division of SpaceX, to provide satellite broadband services in the country, according to the president’s office.

This move follows the passage of a new telecommunications bill by Sri Lanka’s parliament last month, the first amendment to the law in 28 years, which cleared the way for Starlink Lanka to begin operations in the country.

Starlink initially approached Sri Lanka in March with a proposal to establish operations, officials told. The company will be required to pay a tariff for the license, they added.

SpaceX’s Starlink, which controls about 60% of the approximately 7,500 satellites orbiting Earth, is a leader in the satellite internet industry. Musk has been exploring opportunities to expand into South Asia, including India, although no formal plans have been announced yet.
