Summary:
LG Electronics has signed a Wi-Fi standard patent licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing Amazon to use LG’s core Wi-Fi technologies in devices such as Echo speakers, Fire TV Sticks, and Fire Tablets. This deal strengthens LG’s leadership in global Wi-Fi technology and standard-essential patents.
LG and Amazon have struck a major deal: Amazon now has a license to use LG’s Wi-Fi standard-essential patents (SEPs) in many of its connected products, including Echo devices, Fire TV Sticks, and Fire Tablets. These SEPs are patents that must be used to comply with global Wi-Fi standards, making them foundational to Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
According to LG, this agreement underscores its technological leadership in Wi-Fi standard technologies and bolsters its IP-licensing business. LG holds a vast patent portfolio with 97,880 registered patents globally, about half of which are standard-essential. Through this deal, Amazon devices that heavily rely on Wi-Fi connectivity will implement LG’s patented Wi-Fi technology.
Cho Hwi-jae, head of LG’s Intellectual Property Center, said the deal validates LG’s strong SEP portfolio and long-term vision to drive innovation. LG also confirmed it is in talks with other major global companies to license its Wi-Fi SEPs. Looking ahead, LG aims to expand its patent leadership into advanced fields like 6G, AI, quantum computing, and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications.
