HFCL Files 33 Patents in 5G & 6G Tech, Boosting India’s Telecom Sovereignty

Summary:
Indian telecom-gear company HFCL has filed 33 patent applications over the past four years targeting advanced 5G and 6G technologies, spanning areas like energy-efficient systems and AI/ML-based network solutions. HFCL is building intellectual property to help India achieve technological sovereignty in next-generation telecom.

HFCL’s Executive President, Jayanta Dey, says these patents—filed between 2021 and 2025 and now under review by Indian and global patent offices—reflect a unified R&D effort to develop communications network components that are central to future 5G and 6G systems

A key chunk of the applications (around 17) focus on energy-efficient telecom architectures, while another 10 or so targets AI/ML-enabled networking for smarter, more efficient wireless infrastructure. By developing innovations that bridge 5G and 6G, HFCL is aligning with India’s broader “Bharat 6G Vision” launched in 2023, which aims to secure 10% of global 6G intellectual property and reduce dependence on foreign telecom technology.

Jayanta Dey emphasizes that HFCL’s R&D helps advance India’s technological sovereignty—minimizing reliance on external vendors, strengthening network security, and ensuring that future upgrades remain under Indian control.
