India Joins 6G Global Leaders by Patent Filling

After successfully rolling out 5G across the country at record speed, India is now rapidly advancing in 6G technology and ranks among the top six nations globally in filing 6G-related patents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisioned India as a key player in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. Under the “Bharat 6G Vision,” the government is currently evaluating 470 proposals for “Accelerated Research on the 6G Ecosystem.” The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has also funded two next-generation testbeds to further 6G research.

A government-led panel estimates that India could secure 10% of all 6G patents globally and contribute one-sixth to global standards within the next three years. The country has already launched several initiatives, including the “Bharat 6G Vision,” “Bharat 6G Alliance,” a patent and IPR support framework, and 6G testbeds. Industry experts emphasize that to position India as a deep-tech leader, it is essential to expand both wireline and intelligent wireless broadband networks, ensuring reliable connectivity across the country.

India is set to host the 10-day World Telecom Standardisation Assembly (WTSA 2024) from October 14-24, marking the first time this event has been held in the country in the 150-year history of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Telecom leaders, experts, and academics from over 190 countries will gather in New Delhi for the event.

The DoT sees India’s hosting of WTSA 2024 as a unique opportunity to shape the global telecom agenda as the world prepares for advancements like 6G and beyond. To build momentum, the DoT has launched the WTSA 2024 Outreach Sessions in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, offering students a platform to engage with industry experts and gain insights through direct interaction and knowledge-sharing sessions.
