India Hosts 3GPP RAN Meetings for the First Time: A Milestone in 6G Standardization

India Hosts 3GPP RAN Meetings for the First Time

Summary:
India has achieved a historic milestone for the first time in Bengaluru by hosting the 3GPP Radio Access Network (RAN) Working Group Meetings (RAN1 -RAN5). Supported by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI), the event brings together global experts to discuss 6G standardization under 3GPP release 20 and finalize 5G advanced specifications with more than 1,500 delegates out of 50+ countries.

India Hosts 3GPP RAN Meetings for the First Time

On 25 August 2025, India welcomed the 3GPP Radio Access Network (RAN) Working Group Meeting at Whitefield, Bengaluru. For the first time such discussions are being held in the country. Discussion lasting till 29 August 2025, covers two important milestones: finalizing 5G advanced (Release 19) and starting 6G standardization (Release 20).

The event shows India’s growing influence in global telecommunications standard-setting and underlines its ambition to be at the forefront of 6G innovation.

Government Support and Commitment

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Communications have increased full institutional and financial support to host the event. A dedicated DoT delegation is actively participating, which reflects the government’s strong commitment to run India’s 6G vision.

By facilitating such global discussions within India, the government is ensuring that domestic stakeholders- researchers, companies and educational institutions- can directly contribute to the next big jump in telecom sector.

Role of TSDSI in Global Telecom Standards

The Telecom Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI), which is India’s recognized Standards Development Organization (SDO) and one of the seven organizational partners of 3GPP are the official host. Since 3GPP defines technical specifications for mobile communication globally, TSDSI’s participation ensures that India’s perspectives are reflected in shaping both 5G advanced and 6G ecosystems. It only strengthens India’s position as a technology contributor, as a consumer.

Global Participation and Its Significance

Bangalore meetings have seen a record-breaking partnership, including major telecom companies, research institutes, and technical experts with more than 1,500 delegates from over 50 countries. This is the most appearance in any 3GPP RAN working group meeting-a clear indication of the importance of these discussions for the future of mobile connectivity. Such a high-level gathering in India also indicates a change in global telecom dynamics, where emerging markets like India are becoming central for standard-setting.

Why This Matters for India

For Indian stakeholders, this hosting is very important. For the first time, researchers, companies and universities can participate without international travel barriers, obtain direct contact for global standardization processes.

This not only helps India’s innovation ecosystem to align with global development, but also promotes domestic R&D, encourages industry-academia cooperation, and strengthens India’s long-term position in the 6G era.
