DoT Extends Deadline for Mandatory SIM Dealer Verification to March 31

DoT Extends Deadline for Mandatory SIM Dealer Verification to March 31

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has extended the deadline for mobile operators to register their SIM card dealers, agents, and distributors until March 31, 2025. This extension was primarily granted to accommodate BSNL, which required additional time to address certain software-related challenges. Meanwhile, private telecom operators had already completed the registration of their agents and distributors by the initial deadline of January 31, 2025.

This initiative is aimed at strengthening security and ensuring transparency in SIM card distribution by allowing only verified Point of Sale (PoS) agents to issue SIMs, thereby reducing fraudulent activities and spam communications. From April 1, 2025, only registered PoS agents will be authorized to sell SIM cards, with mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) verification for distributors and police verification in certain regions. The DoT has also outlined penalties for non-compliance to enforce stricter adherence to these regulations.
