DoT and WhatsApp ‘Scam Se Bacho’ Campaign Initiated Against Online Scam

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has joined forces with WhatsApp to extend Meta’s ‘Scam Se Bacho’ campaign, aimed at protecting users from online scams and spam. This collaboration seeks to educate citizens on recognizing and reporting fraudulent communications, strengthening digital safety across India.

DoT’s Efforts in Cybercrime Prevention

DoT has launched several initiatives to prevent telecom resource misuse in cybercrime and financial frauds. The Sanchar Saathi portal and mobile app empower citizens to

  • Report fraudulent calls and messages
  • Check and manage their mobile connections
  • Block and trace lost or stolen mobile devices

Additionally, DoT’s Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) shares intelligence with 550 stakeholders, including banks and law enforcement agencies, to counter telecom-based cyber frauds.

Training and Awareness Initiatives

To enhance digital safety awareness, the collaboration includes train-the-trainer workshops for

  • DoT officials
  • Telecom Service Providers (TSPs)
  • Field units

WhatsApp will also explore integrating Sanchar Saathi services into its platform for greater reach and accessibility.

Government and Meta’s Commitment to Digital Safety

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized India’s focus on digital security, stating “Ensuring citizen safety remains a top priority. Our partnership with Meta strengthens efforts to protect people from fraudulent communications and cyber threats.”

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, highlighted the importance of awareness “The best way to stop online scams is by educating users. By working with DoT, we can combine our technological expertise with the government’s commitment to citizen safety.”

User Education and Multilingual Support

WhatsApp, in collaboration with DoT, will create informative content on identifying and reporting online fraud. These resources will be available in multiple regional languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Gujarati, ensuring wider accessibility.

Strengthening Digital Security

DoT remains committed to preventing telecom misuse through advanced solutions and collaborative efforts. By raising awareness and empowering users, this initiative aims to create a safer digital environment for all.
