Deutsche Telekom announced that RTL has become the first TV production company in Germany to connect its studios using a private 5G network, branded as Campus Network Private by the operator.
The network employs active and core equipment from Ericsson, featuring two indoor and four outdoor antennas. This customized infrastructure supports data-intensive applications with response rates under 25 milliseconds, enabling RTL to utilize wireless cameras, microphones, and intercoms. Deutsche Telekom claims data upload rates of 500Mb/s are achievable, with the network operating in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and providing up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster.
Deutsche Telekom added that the football tournament presents an opportunity to test other 5G TV production systems, highlighting the transformation and flexibility offered by wireless cameras compared to wired ones. Matthias Dang, RTL’s Chief Commercial, Technology, and Data Officer, noted that the private 5G network installed at their Cologne facility will allow RTL to deliver content “more conveniently and efficiently.”

Tests of network slicing with RTL demonstrated that the setup would provide flawless live broadcasts to event sites, regardless of the load on the mobile network. The private 5G network will cover an area of more than 35,000 square meters, including public spaces.
Deutsche Telekom’s deal with RTL follows a trend of providing private 5G for sporting events. Recently, its US subsidiary provided connectivity for the PGA Championship golf contest. Similarly, European counterpart Orange will be the sole network provider for the Paris Olympic Games in July and August, emphasizing the significant role of private 5G.
