Affordable Satellite Communication to Bridge Remote Areas

Breaking down barriers to connect remote areas may soon become a reality, as the government and private sector join forces to expand digital network infrastructure using satellite communication (Sat-Comm) technology. During the India Mobile Congress (IMC), telecom industry leaders and senior government officials underscored the importance of advancing Sat-Comm technology, which has become more affordable and accessible.

VJ Christopher, a wireless adviser to the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) within the Ministry of Communication, highlighted a paradigm shift in India’s Sat-Com sector. While satellite communication technology has been available since the 1980s, its high cost limited mass adoption. However, advancements in India’s space program, along with innovations like 3D printing and lightweight solar panels, have driven down costs. With a larger user base, the cost is expected to decrease further. Prafull Kumar, Vice President & Product Head at Reliance Jio, noted that advancements in space technology, such as reusable satellites, will contribute to reduced deployment costs.

According to a recent report by KPMG in India, the country’s satellite communications market is poised for substantial growth over the next five years. It is estimated that the Sat-Comm sector, currently valued at $2.3 billion annually in India, will reach $20 billion by 2028, as stated by Naveen Aggarwal, Office Managing Partner at KPMG in India.

India currently ranks fourth globally in terms of investments in the Sat-Comm sector, with nearly $2 billion invested in 110 local firms. Furthermore, India holds the fifth position in private space companies and the startup ecosystem.
