BSNL Opens Data Centers to Private Players and Startups Under Revenue-Sharing Model

BSNL Opens Data Centers to Private Players and Startups Under Revenue-Sharing Model

Summary:
BSNL has launched a new data center partnership and revenue-sharing policy that opens its vast infrastructure to private players, startups, and entrepreneurs. This initiative allows businesses to establish micro and edge data centers using BSNL’s facilities, boosting India’s digital infrastructure, cloud adoption, and data localization efforts.

BSNL Opens Data Centers to Private Players and Startups Under New Partnership Policy

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has taken a major step toward transforming India’s digital ecosystem by opening its data centre network to private companies and startups. Under its new revenue-sharing and partnership policy, BSNL will allow partners to set up micro and edge data centers on its existing infrastructure, significantly reducing the cost and complexity of deploying cloud and data services. The initiative is already being implemented in key cities such as Hyderabad and Guwahati.

This move marks a strategic shift in BSNL’s business model — from being just a telecom operator to becoming a digital infrastructure enabler. The goal is to empower MSMEs, startups, and enterprises to scale cloud-based solutions efficiently while ensuring that data remains secure and sovereign within India’s jurisdiction.

How the Partnership Model Works

Under the new policy, BSNL provides space, power, and bandwidth at over 70,000 network stations across India. Partners can leverage these facilities to deploy plug-and-play micro data centres, without heavy upfront capital expenditure.

The revenue-sharing model ensures mutual growth — BSNL earns from infrastructure usage, while private partners benefit from access to a ready-made network and operational support. Additionally, prepaid cloud subscriptions and customized packages have been introduced to attract MSMEs, startups, and retail users, encouraging innovation, scalability, and rapid cloud adoption.

Technology and Security Highlights

BSNL’s upgraded data centers now feature AI-integrated GPU infrastructure, designed to support high-performance and low-latency applications. These facilities are future-ready, with post-quantum security and advanced cybersecurity frameworks under BSNL’s sovereign cloud — ensuring sensitive government and enterprise data remain within Indian borders.

Businesses can also opt for exclusive, co-located Private Micro Data Centers, offering enhanced privacy, faster processing, and localized data control.

Driving India’s Digital and Green Future

This initiative aligns with India’s data localization and Digital India goals by expanding cloud access to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. BSNL’s focus on sustainability — using energy-efficient cooling and renewable energy integration — also ensures that these data centers are green and environmentally responsible.

By enabling edge computing, BSNL’s model supports emerging technologies like IoT, AI, and 5G applications, while helping India move toward a decentralized and resilient digital infrastructure.

BSNL’s decision to open its data center ecosystem to private players represents a pivotal moment for India’s digital transformation. The model empowers startups, accelerates cloud innovation, and strengthens India’s position as a secure and self-reliant digital economy. With sustainability, data sovereignty, and innovation at its core, BSNL’s initiative is set to reshape the future of cloud and data infrastructure across the country.
