Why India Needs More Data Center Cities to Power AI and 5G Growth

Why Are Data Centers Important for India’s Digital Future? 

India should develop more data center-centric cities with robust power and renewable energy infrastructure to meet the growing demands from AI and 5G-based services. This recommendation comes from Vipin Jain, Chairman of Operations in CtrlS Datacenter, one of the major data center operators of India. Jain emphasizes that stamp duty exemption is no longer enough. 

“If millions or billions of people start using services like ChatGPT, we will need 50 times more computing capacity, and only dedicated data centers can be possible to cities,” says Jain. 

Surge in AI and 5G Driving Infrastructure Demand 

India’s AI, 5G network density, IOT, and cloud-based technologies are leading to an unprecedented demand for computing infrastructure, increasing high performance computing infrastructure. Companies like CtrlS, Sify Technologies, Yotta Data Services, Nxtra like Airtel, Equinix, and ST Telemedia GDC are rapidly constructing hyperscale and age data center to support this digital shift. 

Jain said, “We cannot match the data center capacity of the US and China over the next 10 years. But becoming the third largest data center hub globally is within access to India.” 

CtrlS Strategy for Building AI-Ready Data Centers 

Headquarters in Telangana, CtrlS operated Super-Hyperscale and Hyperscale data centers in major cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Noida, Bangalore, and Kolkata, with edge data centers in Ahmedabad, Patna, Lucknow and Bhubaneswar. 

Their three-dimensional strategy which focuses on: 

  • Super Hyperscale Data Center- Up to 500mw capacity.  
  • Edge Data Center- For low latency, regional service distribution.  
  • Ensuring AI and Cloud readiness- fundamental structure is future-proof.  

The CtrlS currently claims to invest $2 billion in the next six years to add a 250mw operational IT load and add another 350mw of AI/Cloud-Redi capacity in the next six years, doubling its workforce and reaching net-zero emissions up to 2040. 

To unlock its complete digital capacity, India must go beyond isolated data centers and invest fully integrated data center cities with reliable power and renewable energy resources. This change is not only necessary for AI adoption – it is fundamental for India’s digital economy to lead globally in the coming decade.
