BSNL MTNL Asset Sale Earns Over Rs 10,000 Crore

BSNL MTNL Asset Sale Earns Over Rs 10,000

One of the key strategies the government identified to support BSNL and MTNL asset monetization. Both state-run telecom operators had a mix of core and non-core assets that were not being fully utilized. As part of the 2019 relief package, the government directed these telcos to sell underutilized assets to raise funds. While the pace of monetization has been relatively slow, it has helped generate over ₹10,000 crore since 2019.

BSNL and MTNL Earned ₹12,984 Crore Through Asset Monetization

BSNL has earned ₹2,387.82 crore from non-core assets and ₹8,204.18 crore from core assets (as of January 2025). In comparison, MTNL earned ₹2,134.61 crore from non-core assets and ₹258.25 crore from core assets during the same period.

This brings BSNL’s total earnings from asset monetization to ₹10,592 crore, while MTNL has raised ₹2,392.86 crore. Together, the two telecom operators have generated ₹12,984.86 crore through this initiative—a significant financial boost.

More Asset Monetization Needed for Future Growth

Despite this progress, BSNL and MTNL still have a long way to go in monetizing more assets. For BSNL, these funds are crucial as it prepares to roll out 4G and 5G networks

So far, BSNL has deployed over 80,000 4G sites across India, of which approximately 75,000 sites have been monetized. The telco aims to expand its 4G network to 1 lakh sites by June 2025, paving the way for a stronger presence in India’s telecom market.
