Indian Government Orders Blocking International Calls

Blocking International Calls Ordered by Indian Government

Fraudsters have been reported to make international spoofed calls displaying Indian mobile numbers to Indian citizens, committing cyber-crime and financial fraud. These calls appear to originate within India but are actually made by cyber-criminals abroad who manipulate the calling line identity (CLI). Recently, these spoofed calls have been used in fake digital arrests, FedEx scams, drug/narcotic schemes in couriers, impersonations of government and police officials, and threats of mobile number disconnections purportedly by DoT/TRAI officials.

To combat this, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have developed a system to identify and block such spoofed calls from reaching Indian telecom subscribers. TSPs have now been directed to block these incoming international spoofed calls. Currently, TSPs are already blocking incoming international spoofed calls that display Indian landline numbers, as per DoT’s directives.

Ensuring the safety and security of users is a key part of the Digital India initiative. DoT has implemented various measures, including the citizen-centric Sanchar Saathi portal, to protect telecom users. Despite these efforts, some fraudsters may still find ways to succeed. You can help by reporting any suspected fraudulent communications to the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
