Indian Government Sets Up 100 5G Labs, Approves Rs 275.88 Crore for 6G R&D Projects

Summary:
100 dedicated 5G labs has been set up by Govt of India in educational institutions to create 6g-tailoured ecosystems for startups, researchers and academics. Under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme, the government has already approved 104 projects worth Rs 275.88 crore for 6G research and development. The initiative also includes the formation of India 6G alliance to run innovation and to align with India 6G vision. 

Parliament was informed that the central government has established 100 5G labs in educational institutions across India. This laboratory focuses on capacity building, focusing on promoting research and creating a strong 6G-ecosystem that strengthens academics, startups and telecommunications industry. 

Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) Scheme 

  • Launched: 1 Oct 2022 
  • Objective: Funding for R&D and innovation in telecom technologies including 6G. 
  • Associates: Academic, startups, MSMEs, research institute and telecom industry players. 
  • Status: By July 2025, 104 projects related to 6G have been approved with total funds of ₹275.88 crore. 

The scheme is designed to promote indigenous telecom research, reduce imports and establish India as a leader in next generation communication technologies. 

Bharat 6G Alliance 

To support the Bharat 6G vision, the government has provided the facility to form the India 6G alliance. This body brings together: 

  • Domestic industry 
  • Academia 
  • National research institutions 
  • Standards organization 

The Alliance will play an important role in drafting an action plan for 6G development, standardization and global leadership. With 100 5G labs, R&D projects worth Rs 275.88 crore, and Bharat 6G Alliance, India is strategically preparing for the 6G era, which aims to place itself as a global leader in telecom innovation
