Bharat 6G Vision Progressing, India Set for 6G Rollout by 2030

The development of 6G technology is currently underway at the international level and is expected to be commercially available by 2030, according to a press release. As part of its Bharat 6G Vision, India aims to be a key player in the development and deployment of 6G technology.

To facilitate this, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has established the Bharat 6G Alliance, a consortium of domestic industry leaders, academia, national research institutions, and standards organizations, to develop a structured action plan for 6G.

The frequency bands 4400-4800 MHz, 7125-8400 MHz, and 14.8-15.35 GHz are currently under study by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for potential use in International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT). A final decision on these bands for 6G will be taken at the World Radio Communication Conference (WRC) in 2027.

At present, India has identified the 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz bands for IMT-based services. Telecom operators who have acquired spectrum in these bands through auctions are permitted to deploy any technology, including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, and future 6G, depending on the availability of compatible devices.
