Mobile Data in India is World Cheapest, Says DoT

Mobile Data in India is World Cheapest, Says DoT

India continues to lead in offering some of the world’s cheapest mobile data, driving its digital revolution, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) stated in a post on X on January 27, 2025. The department credited affordable handsets, widespread internet penetration, and low data costs for making mobile phones accessible to nearly every citizen.

Transforming Everyday Life

The DoT highlighted India’s evolving communication landscape, noting that as of October 2024, the country had 1.15 billion mobile subscribers, with 1.06 billion actively using services. Additionally, wireless internet subscribers reached 928 million by June 2024.

“The cost of calls has dropped to just 3 paise per minute, while mobile data costs Rs 9.08 per GB—among the lowest globally,” the department stated. India also leads the world in average monthly data consumption per smartphone, reaching 32GB, compared to the global average of 19GB.

5G Rollout and Future Innovations

The DoT emphasized that India’s digital future is set to improve further with 5G. Launched in late 2022, 5G promises ultra-fast speeds, seamless connectivity, and transformative applications across industries.

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant highlighted how 5G will drive advancements in digital education, healthcare (such as connected ambulances and remote diagnostics), secure digital payments, electric vehicle infrastructure, and smart agriculture. “The future is here,” the DoT noted.

In another post, the DoT shared a video from the Republic Day parade, showcasing India’s digital achievements, including UPI’s Scan to Pay initiative by the Ministry of Rural Development.
