DoT Broadens M2M and WPAN/WLAN Registration to Include All Entities

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), operating under the Ministry of Communications (MoC), has extended the registration for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Wireless Personal Area Network/Wireless Local Area Network (WPAN/WLAN) to encompass all entities involved in these activities. This includes companies, government departments, organizations, partnerships, and more, engaged in M2M service provisioning and WPAN/WLAN Connectivity Provisioning. The registration process is to be completed through the SaralSanchar portal by March 31, 2024.

Failure to comply with the registration requirement may lead to the withdrawal or disconnection of telecom resources acquired from the Authorized Telecom Licensees, as per the official release. The decision is aimed at expanding the scope of registration to promote a standardized and secure M2M/IoT ecosystem. It seeks to address the concerns of M2M Service Providers and WPAN/WLAN Connectivity Providers related to interactions with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), KYC, Security, Encryption, and more.

The DoT emphasizes its commitment to fostering a secure and innovative M2M/IoT (Internet of Things) landscape, aligning with the goals of the National Digital Communication Policy to build a robust digital communication infrastructure and facilitate next-generation technologies, as mentioned in the official release.

The government’s issuance of guidelines for the registration process is based on considerations of TRAI’s recommendations on “Spectrum, Roaming, and Quality of service (QoS) related requirements in M2M Communications,” along with input from stakeholders in the M2M industry.
