Vodafone Idea in Satcom Partnership Talks

Vodafone Idea in Satcom Partnership Talks

Vodafone Idea (Vi) is in discussions with satellite communication (satcom) providers to explore potential partnerships, aiming to enhance connectivity in areas where traditional infrastructure—such as fiber optic cables or cell towers—is unavailable. These use cases primarily include remote rural regions and underserved urban areas, according to Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vodafone Idea, in a statement.

However, Singh noted that several challenges remain, including device costs and regulatory approvals for using satellite connectivity for terrestrial networks. “We are in conversations with partners and will share an update at an appropriate time,” he said, without revealing further details.

The development comes shortly after Jio Platforms signed an agreement with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s broadband services to India. The deal was announced a day after Bharti Airtel entered into a similar pact with SpaceX. Both agreements are contingent on SpaceX obtaining the necessary approvals to operate Starlink in India.
