Reliance Jio was India’s largest telecom operator, adding 1.95 million subscribers in August, followed by BSNL’s 1.38 million and Airtel’s 496,087. Meanwhile, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority India (TRAI), Vodafone Idea (Vi) has lost about 308,984 users. At the end of August, Jio’s subscriber base reached 479.45 million, Airtel 391.97 million, Vi 203.55 million and BSNL 91.75 million. Analysts attribute BSNL’s improved influence to its nationwide 4G expansion.
Active User Growth: Jio and Airtel Lead, Vi’s Losses Narrow
According to the Dam Capital, Jio added 2.3 million active (VLR) users, followed by 1.3 million, while Vi loss fell to only 0.1 million. This indicates the stability and competition of the growing market in the telecom sector.
Broadband and M2M Growth Trends
Jio added 0.9 million new home broadband users, which gives 40% market share command, while Airtel has been 21%. In the M2M (machine-to-machine) segment, Airtel led Jio with 0.9 million new connections of Jio and 9.9 million new connections ahead of Vi. Airtel ARPU (average income per user) dominates with 59% market share in the category, followed by Vi (19%), Jio (18%) and BSNL (4%).
Porting Requests Indicate Rising Competition
India saw 15.1 million porting requests in August, the highest in recent times. This increase reflects intense competition between telecom operators because users actively find more connectivity and value grown services.
