Telefonica Germany Deploys 5G Campus Network Slicing for 6G Health Institute

Telefonica Germany (O2 Telefonica) and the 6G Health Institute (6GHI) have inaugurated a campus network featuring 5G Network slicing technology at the 6GHI facilities in Markkleeberg, located in the state of Saxony. This deployment of 5G slicing at 6GHI premises signifies a significant progression for research initiatives within the in-house 6G Health Lab, which is powered by O2 Telefonica, as stated in a recent press release by the telecommunications company. 

Apart from delegates from Telefonica Germany, the 6G Health Institute, and Huawei, the ceremonial inauguration at the 6G Health Institute premises was graced by the presence of the district administrator of the district of Leipzig and the mayor of the city of Markkleeberg. Highlighting the significance of 5G slicing, the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of 6GHI emphasized its role in providing a dependable and swift connection, thus facilitating the swift digitization of healthcare, which is deemed essential in Saxony. 

Telefonica Germany expressed its satisfaction with the launch of the campus network, stating, “We are delighted to contribute to the advancement of medical technology through our 5G campus solution and to bolster Saxony’s position as a hub for research with cutting-edge network technologies. We provide our partners and business clients with a diverse array of networking solutions tailored precisely to their requirements and applications, including those for the 6G Health Institute.” 

Telefonica highlighted ongoing developments within the lab, where medical IoT applications on the 5G network are currently undergoing development and testing. Additionally, research on 6G mobile communications for medical technology is in progress. The 6G Health Institute (6GHI) is dedicated to advancing eHealth and digital healthcare in Central Germany, with the aim of enhancing healthcare worldwide in the future. 

Moreover, Telefonica Germany underscored that 5G represents a significant advancement, being faster, more reliable, and more stable than its predecessors. The implementation of slicing technology provides the capability to design a 5G network tailored to various requirements, ensuring efficient utilization. Specifically, in this instance, a campus network was established utilizing 5G slicing technology, with the potential for expansion to encompass additional areas in the future.
