What To Expect From Telecom Industry in 2024

The Prospects of Monetizing 5G in 2024

In the upcoming year, 2024, the telecom industry anticipates significant strides in monetizing 5G technology. With a surge in 5G smartphone adoption and OEMs introducing more affordable devices, the 5G subscriber base in India is poised to surpass 250 million. However, the critical question remains – will telecom operators seize the opportunity to monetize this substantial market?

Tariff Hikes in the 5G Era

A potential shock for customers in 2024 could come in the form of tariff hikes. As 5G gains rapid acceptance among Indian consumers, the possibility of tariff increases looms large. While Airtel’s CEO hints at a cautious approach, uncertainty prevails regarding whether 5G services will be offered at higher-priced plans. The looming general elections have potentially delayed tariff hikes, but industry experts foresee an inevitable increase post-election.

Entry of Satcom Players in 2024

Jio SpaceFiber and Eutelsat OneWeb are set to revolutionize the telecom landscape with the initiation of services in 2024. Eutelsat OneWeb, having secured government approvals, awaits spectrum allocation. Meanwhile, Jio SpaceFiber showcased the capabilities of its MEO satellites. The entry of these satellite communication players is expected to bring about transformative changes in connectivity.

6 GHz Spectrum Allocation for 5G/IMT Services

The demand for 6 GHz spectrum allocation intensifies as telcos seek enhanced resources for 5G/IMT services. With the GSM Association emphasizing the importance of the 6 GHz spectrum for 5G, the government faces the critical decision of meeting this demand. Recognized as vital for IMT services at WRC 2023, the allocation of 6 GHz spectrum is pivotal for advancing 5G capabilities in India.

Extending 5G Coverage to Villages

Telecom giants, such as Airtel, express intentions to extend 5G coverage to rural areas. While Airtel has outlined plans for 5G deployment in villages, the feasibility and scope of such initiatives remain to be seen. The limited use cases for 5G in urban settings raise questions about the practicality of rapid rural deployment.
