Starlink Mini Is Easier to Carry Than You Think

SpaceX has launched its eagerly awaited Starlink Mini, now available across the U.S. The compact antenna is priced at $599, with monthly subscriptions ranging from $50 to $150. With no long-term contracts, users can start and stop service at any time, and a 30-day trial is included. The Starlink Mini, roughly the size of a laptop, combines a satellite dish and Wi-Fi router in one, consuming about half the power of Starlink’s standard dish. It can run on a portable USB battery and withstand extreme weather, including snow, sleet, rain, and high winds.

This is the first time high-speed internet will be available in remote areas not reached by cell towers. Despite its small size, the Mini supports up to 128 devices and offers low latency, which is ideal for online gaming. Starlink promises users a seamless gaming experience anywhere they travel.

In June, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared his experience with the Mini on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I just set it up right now and am writing this post through space. Took less than 5 minutes. Easily carried in a backpack. This product will change the world.” Musk also posted speed test results showing 100Mbps download, 11.5Mbps upload, and 23ms latency.

Starlink Mini is available throughout North America, with two plan options: Mini Roam at $50 per month for 50GB of portable data, which equals around 20 hours of HD streaming, and the Regional plan at $150 per month, which offers unlimited mobile data with pay-per-GB options for in-motion use.

The Mini measures 16.92 x 13.14 x 3.11 inches and weighs just under 15 pounds. It operates in temperatures between -22°F and 122°F and is IP67 dust- and water-resistant.

Is the Starlink Mini expensive?

The hardware costs $599, with subscription prices ranging from $50 to $150 per month. Though Starlink offers the fastest satellite internet speeds, it’s pricier than competitors like HughesNet, which has plans from $50 to $95 per month and an upfront equipment cost of up to $450. For comparison, HughesNet’s highest-speed plan will likely cost you $545 for the first month, versus $749 for Starlink Mini’s regional plan.

What is Starlink Mini Speed?

According to the FCC, broadband standards require a minimum of 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload. The Starlink Mini meets the download speed but falls short in uploads, with Elon Musk’s test showing 100Mbps download and 11.5Mbps upload speeds.
