Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell Service are Expanding Global Connectivity

Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX, recently described SpaceX’s technology as “alien-level” while highlighting the advancements of Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell (DTC) service. This satellite-powered communication technology is gaining momentum globally, offering new possibilities in connectivity.   

DTC Service: Texting Without Hardware Upgrades   

Starlink’s DTC service allows users with standard LTE phones to send text messages without requiring any hardware upgrades or additional apps. Recently, Starlink expanded its satellite network by launching 12 new DTC satellites with SpaceX’s help, ensuring reliable text messaging services.   

Several major telecom operators have partnered with Starlink to offer DTC services to their customers, including:   

T-Mobile (USA)   

– Rogers (Canada)   

– One NZ (New Zealand)   

– KDDI (Japan)   

– Optus (Australia)   

– Entel (Chile and Peru)   

– Salt (Switzerland)   

What’s Next for DTC?   

Currently limited to text messaging, the service will soon enable voice calls and internet access. Starlink plans to expand partnerships with more telecom operators as it continues deploying DTC satellites.   

From 2025, Starlink will also introduce IoT (Internet of Things) connectivity as part of its DTC service, broadening its application to smart devices and industrial use cases.   

Starlink’s Plans for India   

Starlink is actively working to launch its services in India, ensuring compliance with the country’s security norms. However, the allocation of satellite spectrum remains a contentious issue. The Indian government’s recent decision to allocate satellite spectrum administratively to satcom providers has been welcomed by Elon Musk.   

Despite regulatory hurdles, Starlink’s readiness to enter the Indian market signals its intent to play a pivotal role in the country’s satellite communication landscape.
