Over 2.14 lakh Gram Panchayats Connected with Broadband, Centre Says

BharatNet, the world’s largest rural broadband connectivity program, has successfully connected over 2.14 lakh gram panchayats using optical fiber, radio, and satellite technologies, the government announced on 21 Dec. Launched in October 2011, this ambitious initiative aims to provide affordable high-speed internet access to every gram panchayat across the country.

The Ministry of Communications described BharatNet as “not merely an infrastructure project; it is the backbone of India’s journey towards a truly digital nation.” The project is designed to empower rural India by fostering inclusive growth and bridging the digital divide between urban and rural communities.

Key Achievements of BharatNet

  • Connectivity: 2,14,283 gram panchayats are now connected through BharatNet.
  • Optical Fiber Network: A staggering 6,92,299 km of Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) has been laid.
  • Affordable Internet: Broadband services in rural areas start at just ₹99 per month, with an estimated monthly data usage of 1,37,967 TB.

Phased Implementation

BharatNet is being executed in three phases:

  1. Phase I (Completed in December 2017): Focused on laying optical fiber cables to connect 1 lakh gram panchayats, leveraging existing infrastructure.
  1. Phase II: Expanded coverage to an additional 1.5 lakh gram panchayats using a combination of optical fiber, radio, and satellite technologies. This phase saw collaborative efforts involving state governments and private entities.
  1. Phase III (Ongoing): Aims to future-proof the network by integrating 5G technologies, enhancing bandwidth capacity, and ensuring robust last-mile connectivity. This phase is dedicated to improving accessibility and reliability.

Socio-Economic Impact

The Ministry highlighted BharatNet’s transformative effects on rural India, emphasizing its contributions to:

  • Digital Inclusion: Enabling rural communities to participate in the digital economy.
  • Economic Opportunities: Supporting entrepreneurship and job creation.
  • Education and Healthcare: Facilitating access to online learning and telemedicine.
  • Empowered Local Governance: Strengthening the digital infrastructure for better governance.

With BharatNet, the government envisions a digitally inclusive India, where rural areas can access high-speed internet and leverage the benefits of a connected world. This groundbreaking initiative underscores India’s commitment to building a robust digital foundation for its future.
