Know About Malaysia’s 5G Enabled Autonomous Bus

Malaysian 5G network provider Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), autonomous vehicle solutions developer eMooVit Technology, and Ericsson have unveiled a 5G-enabled autonomous electric bus, demonstrating advanced use cases aimed at improving safety and efficiency in public transportation.

5G-Driven Innovations in Public Transport

This showcase follows a May 2024 memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the three partners, featuring a proof-of-concept trial that highlights several 5G applications. These include in-vehicle public Wi-Fi, real-time remote monitoring, and journey log collection. Future trials will focus on integrating the autonomous bus with smart city infrastructure and exploring the potential for 5G remote driving in emergency situations.

“When commercialized, these innovations—including in-vehicle CCTV and real-time telemetry monitoring—will enhance safety and reliability for passengers while lowering operational costs for bus operators,” DNB said in a statement.

Advantages of Autonomous Transport

The Minister of Transport emphasized the benefits of autonomous vehicles, noting that they can optimize traffic flow, reduce human error, and improve the efficiency of road use. “Autonomous electric buses also offer significant environmental advantages, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, particularly in urban areas,” the Minister added.

DNB’s Chief Strategy Officer highlighted the importance of 5G in this innovation, stating that it provides reliable real-time connectivity essential for data processing, system integration, and future transportation solutions. “5G enables improved communication between vehicles and infrastructure like traffic signals and central traffic management systems, ensuring enhanced safety and security through real-time monitoring systems,” he said.
