Jio Starlink Deal News After Airtel Starlink Partnership

Jio Platforms Ltd announced on March 12 that it has entered into a partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite internet services to India. This move comes just a day after Bharti Airtel signed a similar deal, intensifying competition in the satellite broadband space.

The partnership is contingent on regulatory approvals, as SpaceX is still awaiting authorization from Indian authorities to sell Starlink services in the country. Under the agreement, Jio and SpaceX will explore ways Starlink can enhance Jio’s network while also complementing SpaceX’s direct-to-consumer and enterprise offerings. Jio will distribute Starlink solutions through its retail stores and online platforms, making Starlink equipment available in physical outlets and establishing customer service channels for installation and activation.

This collaboration combines Jio’s vast mobile network and data traffic leadership with Starlink’s expertise in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity to deliver reliable broadband access across India, especially in remote and underserved areas. Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating “Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all.”

He further added that integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem will expand reach and improve network reliability in an AI-driven digital era, empowering businesses and communities alike.  This agreement aligns with Jio’s broader mission to make high-speed internet accessible to enterprises, small businesses, and rural communities. Starlink will complement Jio’s existing broadband services, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber, ensuring connectivity even in the most challenging locations.

However, regulatory approvals remain a major hurdle for Starlink’s entry into India. The Indian space regulator IN-SPACe and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have yet to clear SpaceX’s proposal, making government authorization a critical step before the partnership can move forward.
