Summary:
At the 2025 Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Limited, Akash Ambani introduced JioFrames, a smart glasses concept from Reliance Jio that was later showcased at the India AI Impact Summit. Although not yet commercially available and not the first of its kind in India, JioFrames highlight a broader shift beyond smartphones toward AI-powered wearable technology. Designed to integrate seamlessly into daily life, the glasses support features such as hands-free calling, photo and video capture, live streaming, music playback, fitness tracking, and real-time text translation. With global players like Apple and Samsung exploring similar innovations—and products like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses already on the market—JioFrames could strengthen Jio’s position in the evolving smart wearables space if successfully launched.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, unveiled the JioFrames during the 2025 Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries Limited. More recently, at the India AI Impact Summit, the company presented the device to both media representatives and users. After seeing JioFrames in action, I found the concept truly impressive. Although Reliance Jio is neither the first company in India to introduce such a product nor has it made the device commercially available yet, the potential impact of JioFrames could still be significant.
In our view, the direction of technology is gradually shifting beyond smartphone screens. Smart glasses appear poised to shape the next phase of innovation, and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are bringing that vision closer to reality. Companies like Apple and Samsung have already been developing similar devices, while the collaboration between Meta and Ray-Ban is widely known.
Smart glasses stand out because they feel intuitive and seamlessly integrate into everyday life. They align naturally with existing digital ecosystems and maintain a stylish appearance. Just as people carry their smartphones everywhere—whether to the office, the gym, or elsewhere—smart glasses could fit effortlessly into daily routines. According to Reliance Jio, JioFrames allow users to take photos and videos and stream music while on the move.
In addition, the device supports hands-free calling, instant live streaming on social media, real-time broadcasting, fitness tracking insights, quick text translation directly within the user’s field of view, enhanced learning tools, and more. Should Jio succeed in delivering a commercially viable smart glasses product, it could further strengthen the company’s position in the technology space. Several Indian firms have attempted similar ventures without lasting success. Currently, the most widely recognized smart glasses available commercially are the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which are now also accessible in India for consumers interested in exploring this category.
