Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, has disclosed that India has already initiated efforts to position itself as a leader in 6G technology, with the goal of becoming a significant global contributor to the field by 2029.
In June of this year, India’s 6G network, named ‘IMT 2030,’ was approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ITU 6G Framework was developed through collaborative endeavors involving member countries of the United Nations (UN).
This development followed the release of the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ document by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 23, 2023. The vision outlines India’s aspiration to be at the forefront of designing, developing, and deploying 6G technology by the year 2030. The ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ is firmly rooted in principles of affordability, sustainability, and ubiquity.
Minister Vaishnaw also commended Google’s significant decision to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India, deeming it a noteworthy accomplishment. The announcement of Google Pixel 8’s introduction to the Indian market in 2024 was made at the Google for India 2023 event by Google’s Senior Vice President for Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh.
Vaishnaw expressed his satisfaction with the current state of domestic electronics manufacturing, emphasizing that it has surpassed the $100 billion mark. He highlighted the substantial growth in mobile phone manufacturing, which has grown from a negligible figure to an impressive $44 billion, with $11 billion in mobile exports. India is also striving to establish itself as a major manufacturer of laptops, tablets, and servers, with hopes of replicating the success achieved in mobile manufacturing for these devices.
