India’s First D2D Satellite Connectivity
During the trial, messages were transmitted over 36,000 km via Viasat’s geostationary L-band satellites, highlighting the technical feasibility of satellite services for mobile connectivity in India.
Direct-to-Device (D2D) Technology
D2D connectivity allows everyday devices—such as smartphones and smartwatches—along with industrial equipment to connect seamlessly to both terrestrial and satellite networks without the need for additional satellite hardware. This innovation, aligned with global 3GPP Release 17 standards, promises continuous connectivity regardless of location.
Impacts of D2D Connectivity
Viasat emphasized that D2D technology could revolutionize India’s production, supply chain, and automotive sectors, making them more efficient, sustainable, and safer. It could also bridge connectivity gaps in remote and underserved areas.
BSNL and Viasat Partnership
BSNL’s Chairman expressed pride in leading this innovation, noting that D2D technology will enhance critical services, disaster recovery, and rural connectivity across India through BSNL’s network and Viasat’s satellite constellation.
