India Commits $16.1 Billion to Expand Rural Broadband Scindia

BharatNet, a flagship connectivity initiative by the Indian government, aims to bring high-speed broadband access to rural and underserved areas, bridging the digital divide. Following the merger of Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the latter is now responsible for executing the project. Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced that the government is investing approximately $16.1 billion in the initiative to build a nationwide “digital highway.”

Scindia emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This $16.1 billion investment will create a broadband network comparable to the Bharatmala highway. Just as we have a physical highway of cement and concrete spanning India, we are now constructing a digital highway that will connect every citizen, not just within India but to the global digital ecosystem.”

So far, BharatNet has connected over 2,14,000 gram panchayats across the country. To enable this extensive connectivity, more than 6.9 lakh kilometers of optical fiber cable (OFC) has been deployed. The project has also facilitated over 12 lakh active fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections, along with the installation of more than one lakh Wi-Fi hotspots that are transforming rural India, according to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The initiative is crucial because private telecom operators and internet service providers (ISPs) often hesitate to invest in rural areas due to low financial returns. By taking the lead in building digital infrastructure in remote and backward regions, the government aims to ensure that every citizen has access to the opportunities of the digital world. With BSNL’s expertise, BharatNet is poised to make a significant impact, driving digital inclusion and empowering millions across the country.
