Through joint research, advanced silicon, Cloud RAN innovations, and live demonstrations at MWC 2026, the partnership aims to build an open, secure, and energy-efficient 6G ecosystem, positioning Ericsson and Intel at the forefront of next-generation telecom evolution. 

Ericsson and Intel have broadened their long-standing strategic alliance to speed up ecosystem preparedness for AI-native 6G rollouts and emerging next-generation applications. The announcement, unveiled at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2026, marks a significant move toward advancing 6G beyond research efforts into commercially deployable network infrastructure.

The enhanced collaboration will cover mobile connectivity, cloud platforms, and advanced computing technologies spanning AI-powered Radio Access Network (RAN) and packet core applications. It will also focus on platform-level security and network functionality to strengthen ecosystem support and shorten the time required to bring cloud-native telecom solutions to market.

AI-Native 6G: Transitioning from Concept to Commercialization

Börje Ekholm, President and CEO of Ericsson, underscored that 6G represents a fundamental transformation in network design.

“6G is not simply the next generation of mobile technology. It will serve as the backbone for distributing AI across devices, edge environments, and the cloud. Ericsson’s extensive track record in network innovation and large-scale operator deployments equips us to drive practical integration throughout the value chain and convert 6G from research into commercial implementation,” he said.

Lip-Bu Tan, CEO of Intel, emphasized Intel’s goal of integrating RAN, core, and edge AI capabilities to support a smooth progression toward AI-native 6G ecosystems.

“Intel’s ambition is to be the clear technology leader in bringing together RAN, Core, and edge AI to facilitate a seamless shift to AI-native 6G environments. In partnership with Ericsson, we will continue demonstrating that the future of network connectivity will be open, energy-efficient, secure, and driven by intelligent AI inference,” Tan stated.

He further noted that upcoming Ericsson silicon built on Intel’s most advanced manufacturing nodes, multi-year joint research programs, and adaptable AI-RAN-ready Cloud RAN solutions powered by Intel Xeon processors will provide the performance, efficiency, and supply assurance demanded by telecom operators worldwide.

Driving AI-Enabled RAN and Cloud-Native Architectures

As 6G progresses beyond theoretical models, the telecom sector requires a coordinated ecosystem aligned with global standards bodies and industry groups. Ericsson and Intel intend to support this environment by advancing high-performance, energy-efficient computing architectures tailored for both AI applied to networks and networks designed to enable AI.

AI-native 6G networks are expected to combine intelligent, programmable frameworks with advanced computing, edge processing, and real-time sensing capabilities. This integration will establish a more adaptive, efficient, and scalable base for new digital services such as autonomous technologies, immersive experiences, industrial automation, and next-generation enterprise connectivity.

In the longer term, the evolution of 6G architecture may bring sensing and computing functions closer together across distributed network layers, allowing enhanced data processing at the edge while preserving centralized intelligence in the cloud.

MWC 2026 Demonstrations Showcase Momentum

Ericsson and Intel have already reached key milestones across Cloud RAN, 5G Core, and open network infrastructure. Their progress is being highlighted at MWC 2026 through several joint demonstrations taking place at Ericsson’s Pavilion in Hall 2, Intel’s Stand 3E31 in Hall 3, and partner ecosystem venues.

These demonstrations feature advancements in AI-driven RAN, cloud-native packet core technologies, and secure, energy-efficient infrastructure platforms built to power the next phase of telecom innovation.

Advancing the 6G Ecosystem

The expanded partnership reflects a shared objective to build an open, secure, and energy-conscious 6G ecosystem. By combining Ericsson’s experience in large-scale network rollouts with Intel’s expertise in advanced silicon and computing architecture, the companies aim to establish a robust platform for AI-enabled connectivity.

As telecom operators prepare to move from 5G toward AI-native 6G, readiness across the ecosystem, platform security, and cloud-native flexibility will play decisive roles in determining rollout speed and commercial outcomes.
