The intervention of the DoT highlights the gravity of Vodafone Idea’s financial crisis, as the existence of Telco now rests on government’s support. Vi has informed the officials that its ongoing loan talks with banks are completely dependent on receiving assistance related to the AGR liabilities.

In response, the government has already taken important steps, including converting ₹36,950 crore into equity, making its share in the company with 49% stake. Additional relief measures under consideration include extending the Vi AGR repayment of 6 to 20 years and transferring to a simple interest calculation model to reduce the burden. The purpose of these proposals is to restructure Vi’s obligations, stabilize its operation and prevent a market duality, which will cause competition and damage to consumer interests.
In addition, Vodafone Idea has filed a petition to the Supreme Court to waive about Rs 30,000 crore in AGR-related punishment and interest. The company argues that if it collapses, the government’s stake will lose value, and a dual spectrum auction between Jio and Airtel will reduce the auction revenue and limit the consumer choice.
The appeal of the DoT for the PMO underlines the urgency of the situation, as Vodafone Idea failure can trigger widespread disruption in the Indian telecom sector, negatively affects the government’s revenue, and leaves millions of users. Immediate intervention is important to preserve competition, protect public investment and ensure sectorial stability.
