As we inch closer to a future where eSIMs replace physical SIM cards entirely, Google has quietly introduced its eSIM transfer tool for Android, signaling a step toward streamlined device setup and management.
Reportedly, an Android Police reader setting up a Galaxy S24 Ultra observed the option to transfer their eSIM from an LG V60 ThinQ by scanning a QR code. Notably, Android Police successfully triggered the transfer prompt between a Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24 Ultra, indicating cross-compatibility.
Previously, Samsung’s SIM transfer tool was limited to Galaxy devices with the One UI 5.1 update. However, following the One UI 6.1 update, users noticed a shift in language suggesting compatibility with non-Galaxy devices, as noted by FragmentedChicken on Reddit.
This subtle change in Samsung’s tool hints at a potential transition to Google’s eSIM transfer tool, initially announced at MWC 2023. Although the launch date remains undisclosed, it’s speculated that Google’s tool may already be operational in Pixel 8 devices. Initially, it was believed that the Pixel 8’s eSIM tool only functioned with other Pixel devices.
However, the tool’s functionality appears limited for now. Reports indicate that it currently works exclusively with eSIM profiles associated with T-Mobile. A more inclusive tool capable of transferring eSIMs across various Android devices would greatly enhance user convenience. It’s hoped that Google will extend compatibility to devices with other carriers in the near future.
